| Virginian finds local ties to family
What he has come up with this time is his second book, basically started in 1978, of one aspect of his father's family: the story of Belden Leslie Winters (1878-1928) and his wife, Anna Ora Eaton (1875-1956) If one were building a genealogical tree, this couple would be the ancestors of his grandmother, Estill Winters Fox, who was born in Coal Grove. Estill grew up in Lawrence County, married in 1919 and moved to Newport News, Va., in the 1930s where she spent the rest of her life. .
Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference
ATLANTA (AP) -Nicklas Lidstrom's 10th All-Star appearance brought out a smile that belied what has become routine for the topflight Detroit defenseman. Joe Thornton is back for his fifth, and seemed miffed that anyone would pass up the chance to show off their talent in the ultimate hockey exhibition. Sidney Crosby and Lidstrom's Red Wings teammate Henrik Zetterberg were in line to start Sunday night in the NHL All-Star game, but injuries made that impossible. The elected goalies: New Jersey's Martin Brodeur for the Eastern Conference, and Vancouver's Roberto Luongo out West turned down invitations due to family commitments. A four-day break in the hectic 82-game schedule is a luxury that comes about just once a season, and the chance to spend it away from the rink is sometimes too much to give up.

Put not your trust in princes, especially not princes who talk to plants. But that's what the government has decided to do. The Department of Health has funded the Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health to set up the Natural Healthcare Council to regulate 12 alternative therapies, such as aromatherapy, reflexology and homeopathy. Modelled on the General Medical Council, it has the power to strike therapists off for malpractice. This is perplexing. How does a regulator decide what is good practice and what is charlatanry when none of it has peer-reviewed, scientific evidence that it works? The prince's foundation says the new council will only register those who have qualifications from their "professional" bodies. That will encourage the burgeoning number of degrees and diplomas in complementary therapies offered by universities, such as the Thames Valley, Westminster or the University of Wales.
